Gibson Les Paul

gibson les paulThe Gibson Les Paul is a solid body electric guitar originally developed in the early 1950s. The Les Paul was designed by Ted McCarty in collaboration with popular guitarist Les Paul, whom Gibson enlisted to endorse the new model. It is one of the most well-known electric guitar types in the world, along with the Fender Stratocaster and Telecaster - Official site.

Fender Stratocaster

One of the most famous, most played, versatile, guitars ever.

fender rock guitar stratocasterThe Fender Stratocaster, often referred to as "Strat", is a model of electric guitar designed by Leo Fender, George Fullerton, and Freddie Tavares in 1954, and manufactured continuously by the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation to the present. It is a double-cutaway guitar, with an extended top horn for balance while standing. The Stratocaster has been used by many leading guitarists and can be heard on many historic recordings. Along with the Gibson Les Paul, the Gibson SG and the Fender Telecaster, it is one of the most common and enduring models of electric guitar in the world. The design of the Stratocaster has transcended the field of music to rank among the classic industrial designs of all time; examples have been exhibited at major museums around the world.

The Best Guitar Players Of All Time

People with a keen interest in any topic, e.g. music or sport, will have their favourite performers and be prepared to defend them against other peoples’ preferred choices. In the music world, one of the most fiercely debated contests is to name the best guitar players of all time.

Whether playing solo, or being part of a band, a guitar player has such an important part to play in how a song comes across to the audience. Just one recent poll collated by rockol.com UK contained four different lists of potential best guitarists!

Some names, such as Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton, appeared on more than one list: Jimi Hendrix topping two. Many are names from the 1950s, 60s and 70s, such as Chuck Berry who normally performed solo, and Keith Richards and Jimmy Page who were members of 60s super groups The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. Interestingly, all three of these musicians are still performing today.

As new music genres and studio facilities developed, other names have appeared including Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth who, as well as being great musicians, topped the Rockol poll of unusually named guitarists!

Music is a subjective pleasure and people will always champion their own favourite guitarists, maybe preferring those who provided the musical background to their adolescence, first relationships or student years.

One thing’s for use. Lists of the best guitar players of all time will be continually rewritten as new talent emerges. What a great prospect!

Fingerpicking artists we love

There is something special about fingerpicking artists. The music they produce is so natural and heavenly. They seem to integrate all genres of music including jazz, blues, country and the like, to create a great experience for the listeners. However, not every artist is able to strike a balance between fingerpicking and singing. All the same, they are those who have mastered the art and created a niche for themselves in the field. Below is a list of three fingerpickers of all time.

The first fingerpicker in the list is none other than the legendary Merle Travis (listen at Midnight Special, 1968). If you are good with the guitar, chances are that you have heard about Travis Picking. The style is named after the artist. He was an inspiration to the likes of Chet Akins, Earl Hooker and Scotty Moore (here he talks about the Sun Session). His best instrument was Gibson Super 400 and his style was a blend of blues, ragtime, Western swing and jazz. Owing to his great style, his instrument is enshrined in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Davy Graham is another renowned fingerpicking artist. He is known for introducing DADGAD tuning in 1964. But that is not all. At one time, he was playing blues with John Mayall using Gibson J-50. He played 6ths and 10ths with such skill and enthusiasm, which made the music even better. It was a different style but with notable influence.

Another artist of our time who have optimized in the art of fingerpicking is Lisbon Soul (to hear what this guy plays here are Lisbon Soul Jango account and Lisbon Soul Youtube account, trust us, it absolutely worth your time). The use of the alluring beats of a guitar in his music has made it so authentic and natural.

While technology has changed the art of music production, listeners are still nostalgic of music produced with physical instruments so if you like guitar and love music, maybe it is time to learn the art of fingerpicking to add some pizzazz in your music, learn by hearing only the best sourcers: Lisbon Soul on Facebook and on Bandcamp, Eleventh Hour by Derek Patton on YouTube and Bill Withers. Plus, here are some of the best fingerpicking songs tabs.
